Installing a home charge point is not fitting an appliance to a wall. It is adding a dedicated circuit that will run at or near its rated load for hours at a time, several nights a week, for years. That places demands on the consumer unit, the cable, the protective devices and the earthing arrangement that a socket circuit never sees.

## Specification detail that changes the job
Two installations on the same street can be very different jobs. These are the variables that decide the scope, the price and the eventual charging experience.

### Charge rates and supply type
A 7kW single-phase unit is the standard domestic choice and replenishes a typical battery comfortably overnight. Slower 3.6kW units make sense only where supply capacity is genuinely constrained, and faster three-phase units are relevant to the small number of homes with a three-phase supply already present.

Load management matters more than raw speed. A charger that can modulate its output against the property's total demand lets you keep a higher charge rate without upgrading the supply, because it backs off when the rest of the house needs the capacity.

### Cable routes and installation methods
Short internal runs from a garage board are the simplest case. Runs across an external wall are clipped or ducted in UV-stable containment; runs to a detached garage or a parking position across a driveway are made in steel wire armoured cable, buried to depth with warning tape above and terminated in a weatherproof gland.
